First to Fall by Ken Ellingwood

If slavery is America’s original sin, then perhaps suppression of a free press is its second.
Ellingwood’s chronicle of the life of Elijah Lovejoy shows how both were intertwined on the
Southern frontier of the 1830s. While a meticulously researched historical account, the story
unfolds like a mystery. Despite knowing beforehand the fate that awaits Lovejoy, the reader
is drawn in to the what-ifs and might-have-beens that may have kept him alive.
