SUMMARY:Wurdack Memorial Presbyterian Final Prayers and Thanksgiving Service
DESCRIPTION:The pandemic has tragically claimed another victim\, Wurdack Memorial Presbyterian Church.  Wurdack Memorial has been the center of a vibrant urban missionary field from its very roots.  Wurdack was born in 1961 as the “child” of the congregation that formed the Victor Street Mission Church formed in 1903.  The Victor Street Mission church was itself created from the mission field adopted by some very earnest members of the First German Presbyterian Church in South St. Louis. \nFrom humble beginnings\, this congregation of ordinary men and women has touched the lives of countless souls\, offering as their mission statement says a chance for neighborhoods filled with the forgotten people to “find what a friend we have in Jesus.”  The mission statement also includes their deepest desire to be “as light to the Lord that shines ever brightly.”  Ironically\, their namesake\, Hugo Wurdack\, who served 40 years as a lay preacher at the Victor Street Mission Church was the founder of Wurdack Light & Development\, where he built\, and lit St. Louis’ first public streetlights! \nBy the early 90s\, Wurdack Memorial was a leading voice in Dutchtown in the fight against urban blight and absentee landlords.  They were offering assistance and hope to the many immigrants that were being “dumped” into the Southside.  From the beginning\, their doors were open to the many stigmatized exiles society had created.  It led\, Fred Hale\, a demographic expert from St. Louis University to claim\, “Of all the Presbyterian churches on the South Side\, Wurdack is one of the most viable and able to carry on the ministry.” \nBut as valiant and faithful as Wurdack sought to be\, it suffered the loss of members and resources as so many of our inner-city congregations have experienced.  And so today\, the sanctuary sits vacant.  While the flames of the good news they ignited in the hearts of their neighbors will turn on\, the candles in the sacred space of Wurdack have slowly flickered out.  Even so\, the congregation knows that Wurdack Memorial lives on in the memory of their Savior.  And at its dusk\, peace settles over the building as the congregation knows it has fought the good fight. \nThe final worship service of Prayers and Thanksgiving will be held on Monday\, April 12\, 2021\, at 3:00 PM.  All are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Given generally growing mental health needs\, especially due to stressors related to the pandemic\, Light for the Darkness and the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy will offer Mental Health First Aid training. We encourage pastors\, deacons\, elders\, youth leaders\, and anyone interested in mental health to attend. Please share this and spread the word. \nWhat is Mental Health First Aid?\nMental Health First Aid is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge\, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a person who may be experiencing a mental health challenge. Also\, it includes how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.\nThe instructor will be our newest advisory board member\, Lawson (Cal) Calhoun\, M.A\, MHFA\, also the clerk of session at Westminster Presbyterian Church St. Louis.\n\nAdult Mental Health First Aid Training (30 spaces available): March 6th from 9am-4pm (deadline to register is 2/20)\nYouth Mental Health First Aid Training (30 spaces available): April 17th\, 9-4pm; (deadline to register is 4/3) (this class is to help adults identify signs in youth\, not a class for youth)\n\nThe course cost per person is normally $170\, but we are receiving the reduced rate of $24 per person\, per course. DESCRIPTION:The Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy invites you to two special events with author\, Shawn Rochester to discuss his book\, The Black Tax: The Cost of Being Black in America. Rochester\, a former corporate development\, and global strategy executive quantifies the fiscal impact of the detrimental tax Black Americans pay in the auto\, housing\, online\, job\, and lending markets. \nThe book examines the staggering financial cost from emancipation to the present day to answer the question of how\, after 400 years\, more than 40 million African Americans own only 2% of U.S. wealth. More than simply identifying the problem\, Rochester lays out an empowerment plan to create much-needed jobs and businesses in the Black community. \nThe first online session will meet on Thursday\, March 4 and the second session is on Thursday\, April 8. Both meetings will begin at 6:30 PM CST. There is no cost to attend\, but advance registration is required. Advance reading of the book is highly encouraged\, but it is not required.
